It’s important to maintain a tidy and hygienic environment for your client when providing care.

As part of providing care, you may be asked to do some light housework for your client. This might include:

  • Cleaning dishes

  • Laundry of linens and clothing

  • Vacuuming spaces used by your client

  • Cleaning and tidying up after your client

Handovers

You should ensure that the household is clean and tidy prior to a handover with another carer. More information on handovers can be found here.

Companionship placements

If you are on a companionship placement, housework may take a more prominent role in your duties. More information on companionship care can be found here.

Pets

Some clients may have a pet (such as a cat or dog) in the household. Occasionally, customers might ask for assistance in taking care of their pet.

When viewing placement adverts on the Elder Hub, it will always be clear if there is a pet in the household. Please take care to read through the ‘Home Environment’ section if you are uncomfortable working around pets. You can also use our ‘Preferences’ tool to filter out placements with pets.

If you are being asked to undertake domestic duties that you don’t think should be part of your regular duties, please get in touch with us and we'll be able to help. More information on contacting Elder can be found here.
